Tournament Rules

The Fonseca Cup is an AAU sanctioned event. Competition is run using both AAU and FMA Elite rule sets — each division is governed by the rules indicated on the schedule (red = AAU, blue = FMA Elite).

AAU Rules

The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Karate Program governs beginner through advanced divisions, including youth, Little Dragons, and team events.

FMA Elite Rules

FMA Elite Rules are based on the competition rules of the World Karate Federation. They govern advanced brown/black belt divisions, including KIAI (Para-Karate) and elite age categories.
